Happenings

  • For the ’24-’25 school year, we have 24 teacher participants across 4 states. Each participant will create and implement a STEM multimodal text set with their students to promote the development of scientific argumentation when engaging with complex texts.
  • During a week in July, we had a week long, virtual professional development diving into text set instruction, scaffolding, and cross-disciplinary practices.
  • Since September, we have held 3 follow-up professional development sessions to continually support our participants’ cross-disciplinary instruction. We discussed incorporating scaffolds that address claim-evidence-reasoning and quantitative reasoning, analyzing student writing, and using student assessments to inform instruction and scaffolding.
  • Peer mentorship is a new addition to our program that provides our participants with further support from their peers.
  • A new STEM topic complex text has been created! Dr. Bath’s Visionary Patent discusses how a medical invention removes eye cataracts and helps those with impaired vision.
  • We are making headlines! Check out what news sources have been saying about our program!
  • Our team participated in an EdWeek panel discussion, titled The Literacy Demands of the Science Classroom, led by Sarah Sparks (Assistant Editor, Education Week). Learn more here!
  • We have FREE teacher resources available on our website! Please check these out here!

A Teacher’s Thoughts on our Program

“I have filled half of a one-subject notebook with notes, thoughts and ideas.  I literally could not write fast enough to capture all of my ideas generated from interacting with peers and mentors. The time to share with other teachers and professors is PHENOMENAL. So often we lack the time to process what we are learning in professional development and the learning is left in the meeting rather than utilized.”

Outcomes

Analyses from Cohort 1 implementation show significant student growth in argumentation. To learn more, here is an explanation of our outcomes.

Our teacher participants have shared how our professional development positively impacts their teaching and learning. Read more about our teachers’ perspectives of the impact of our program.
