Happenings For the ’24-’25 school year, we have 24 teacher participants across 4 states. Each participant will create and implement a STEM multimodal text set with their students to promote the development of scientific argumentation when engaging with complex texts. During a week in July, we had a week long, virtual professional development diving into text set instruction, scaffolding, and cross-disciplinary practices. Since September, we have held 3 follow-up professional development sessions to continually support our participants’ cross-disciplinary instruction. We discussed incorporating scaffolds that address claim-evidence-reasoning and quantitative reasoning, analyzing student writing, and using student assessments to inform instruction and…

Cohort 1 Student Outcomes

Data from students (n = 498) of teachers in Cohort 1 (23-24) participating in the multimodal text sets showed a significant gain in their claim-evidence-reasoning argumentation scores (Cohen’s D = 0.25, p < 0.001). These scores are aligned with the Science-ELA-Math practices in that they require multiple aspects of argumentation including written communication, content knowledge, understanding how to make a claim, identify evidence, and engage in reasoning.  This year, the score also included quantitative reasoning.  Our data suggest that these competencies generate a reliable and unidimensional measure for argumentation.  Students also made a meaningful affective shift in terms of their…

EdWeek Panel Discussion

Members of the Linking Science, Literacy and Mathematics for All Learners team participated in an EdWeek panel discussion, titled The Literacy Demands of the Science Classroom, led by Sarah Sparks (Assistant Editor, Education Week). Discussion with over 240 participants focused on the importance of and innovative ways teachers have integrated complex science text in their instruction. This session was one of a number focused on reading instruction across the content disciplines hosted by Education Week.

Teacher Viewpoints

Teacher Growth“I have learned so much from this experience. There is so much growth when you come in not knowing anything about CER, multimodal text sets etc., and now can talk confidently about it and how it’s being used in the classroom.” Improved Teacher Efficacy“This program has been such a positive influence on my teaching approach. I feel more confident, and my students have been more engaged in their learning.” Learning Community & Collaboration“I truly enjoyed collaborating with other teachers. Discussions with fellow educators and learning new scaffolds were incredibly rewarding!” Content and Instruction Strategies“All…

LSM&L4AL in the News!

Recently the Linking Science, Math & Literacy for All Learners program was showcased in the news! KRCG 13, a mid-Missouri news station, interviewed one of our teacher participants about using the strategies learned in the program within her classroom. EducationWeek, a national platform for education news and resources, wrote an article describing our program and the experience it provides for our teachers and their students. Check out the videos and articles below to learn more! South Callaway science teacher Jeannie Sneller began her research seven years ago at the University of Missouri.https://t.co/M1WMJNmYSj— KRCG…
